Maternity care in the United States is complicated, and can be challenging to navigate.
Hospitals and birth centers vary widely in how they handle births and in their outcomes, ratings, and cost. Doctors and midwives each have their own approaches to care. Maternity care is big business that often puts individual patients’ needs at the bottom of its priorities. Controversies exist about the poor outcomes and high costs of typical maternity care. In this healthcare landscape, it’s important for expectant parents to advocate for themselves and their baby and to have the skills to keep the needs of the mother and baby at the center of care.
The Mastering Maternity™ System was created to help expectant parents become informed consumers of maternity care and to advocate for their and their baby’s needs during pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and postpartum.

Taught by Michal Klau-Stevens, LCCE
I have been involved in issues relating to maternity for almost a full generation (almost 20 years!) and continue to learn from expectant parents and women of all ages about their experiences with maternity, motherhood, and life. Starting with women in my grandmothers’ generation to college-age women, I am connected to women around the country who share their stories and experiences to help others. I use my knowledge as a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, Past President of BirthNetwork National, an expert in consumer maternity care issues, and a mother and grandmother to teach you the information and tools you need now to navigate maternity with confidence!
